Unlimited Free Space:
Comprehensive Waterfront Plan
Transcripts - The whole planet?
USI arrives at Yaffa Bar, where the 4th of July atmosphere is
in full effect. There, USI tries to give free space a chance.
WOMAN
You look totally cool. And totally strange.
You have a name tag. Authorized researcher. Of what? Like radiation or
something? [looks at manifesto] You research unlimited free space?
Unlimited free space. Unlimited as opposed to limited.
VJ
Do you have any experience with unlimited free space?
WOMAN
No. No. I don't even know what unlimited free space
could possibly be. Lots of space?
ND
[to VJ and BK, moving toward a table]
Should we put our bags down?
WOMAN
No. This is very cool. Unlimited free space.
Unlimited free space. You're doing research in unlimited free space.
WOMAN
Free space for what usage?
BK
Free space for usage in everyday life.
ND
However you might want to use this space.
WOMAN
This is so cool. I'm so confused as
to what unlimited - research in unlimited free space. Now, like
what? The whole planet? Is that free space?
WOMAN
That's all unlimited, too. Right?
ANON
Is that ghostbusters?
WOMAN
That's who I thought you were. Ghostbusters.
But it's unlimited free space.
BK
It's an architecture project.
WOMAN
Well, that's an art project: Art project,
architectural project.
BK
In fact, USI is the name of our group.
Which means Unlimited Specialist International. So, unlimited specialist
is [unintelligible]
ND
But we could be art specialists.
We could be any kind of specialists.
WOMAN
Well. Let's get this straight. I would
guess you were art specialists of some sort. But unlimited free space.
It's like you should be in Mexico. There'd be more unlimited free space.
WOMAN
Yeah. But in New York, how much unlimited free space is there?
BK
That's what we want to know.
WOMAN
I would imagine there wouldn't be too much.
ND
So there's no unlimited free space in New York?
WOMAN
I would imagine in New York there's not a lot
of unlimited free space. Though, I would imagine that in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
there's a lot more unlimited free space.
BK
In what sense do you mean this?
WOMAN
I would imagine. I like the concept. Don't
get me wrong. I'm buying into it completely. But in New York,
everything has a market value attached to it. So, how much unlimited
space can there be? Everybody has a dollar on their free space. How
much are you finding? A lot?
ND
You think if there wasn't a dollar attached to this -
WOMAN
There would be more unlimited free space.
Yeah. But I would imagine in New York, any space, free or not,
somebody's laying claim to somehow.
ND
If I could ask a leading question, then
would you say that, if there were no dollars, then there would be
unlimited free space?
WOMAN
If there were no dollars, there would be
a lot more free space. Yes. We're talking free space.
WOMAN
Well, free means there would be no dollars.
WOMAN
Free space. If there were no dollars, there'd
be a lot more free space.
ND
Do you think that this could approach an
unlimited amount?
WOMAN
In New York? I think in New York, it could approach
a better amount. More than you guys are gonna find out. I think you guys
now are going west- [unintelligible]
BK
We're actually going along the borderline,
along the waterfront of Manhattan to find unlimited free space.
WOMAN
But I would imagine in New York, no space
is unlimited and no space isn't free. For there to be unlimited free space
in New York, that's two problems: limits and not space.
BK
Do you ever imagine that there could be
moments of free space?
WOMAN
What kind of moments?
BK
Moments. You know - in time.
WOMAN
I think there would be little moments.
BK
Have you had some moments of unlimited free
space here?
BK
In this bar, for example.
WOMAN
Well, no. Because it's traditional that the
owner of the bar has unlimited free space. You have to ask the bar owner
how much unlimited free space there is. Is it unlimited free? No. He
wouldn't give you an inch.
ND
What about in New York?
WOMAN
That's what I'm saying. In New York,
limited free space - outside of New York - Oklahoma - you might find a
lot of unlimited free space.
