Unlimited Free Space:
Comprehensive Waterfront Plan
Transcripts - Live? Be? Enjoy?
Caught unaware, USI has to give free space a definition.
WOMAN
What are you gonna do with your unlimited free space?
WOMAN
You're gonna live in it. [to VJ]
What're you gonna do with yours?
WOMAN
You're just gonna exist in it. He's living in it.
You're existing in yours. [to BK] And you?
BK
I think I would enjoy it.
WOMAN
You're gonna enjoy it.
BK
Yeah, unlimited free space is -
WOMAN
[to ND] You're in trouble. She's got a fighting chance.
[to BK] You, you're doing the best.
WOMAN
Because you wanna use your unlimited free space.
ND
But I didn't say I'd use it. I just wanna live in it.
WOMAN
But that's giving it a not-unlimited reason to exist.
You're gonna occupy it.
WOMAN
No, no, no. You're gonna occupy yours.
ND
I didn't say I was gonna occupy it.
I just said live in it.
WOMAN
But to live in it is a sense of ownership.
BK
It depends on how you define living.
ND
It depends totally on how you define living.
To me life is not survival. Life is life.
WOMAN
Right. But you have a direct purpose.
WOMAN
A tree is not impressionable. A tree has no purpose.
ND
Life itself has no purpose. In my definition.
Maybe in yours it does.
WOMAN
You allow a use for your space. It's questionable
for hers. [indicates BK] He has hope for his. So he's got the best chance.
ND
No. Not occupy. If it's unlimited free space, I
can't occupy.
WOMAN
Live in it. You have a purpose to it. You're
giving yours a function. You're giving yours meaning. Her meaning is questionable.
His meaning is relevant. [to BK] So, you've got the best chance.
[to VJ] You've got the second. [to ND] And you're fucked.
ND
Enjoyment is only part of life.
WOMAN
No. But enjoying is random.
ND
You can't enjoy everything. But you can live
everything. I don't understand how you came to your conclusion.
WOMAN
Yours is to occupy.
ND
The words "to occupy" you added. I never
said anything about occupation.
WOMAN
You just want to exist in it.
ND
Wait, wait, wait! To be is to exist.
To live is not to exist.
WOMAN
To live is to exist.
ND
But you just said "to be" is to exist.
WOMAN
No, no. [to VJ] What did you say?
ND
She said "to be" and you said that that's to exist.
WOMAN
No, no. To be is random.
WOMAN
No, no. To live has an intent. It has its
purpose. Hers is just to be.
WOMAN
You can be in space any way that you can
be in it. Living and being are two very different things.
ND
I wouldn't agree with that. But I'll accept
it. Because you're answering the questions - it's okay.
WOMAN
If you live, there's a function implied to surviving.
ND
But that's what I said to you. Living does
not imply surviving. Surviving as a Latin word means "over life."
Survival is over life. Survival openly oppresses life. Life and survival
are not the same.
WOMAN
How do you define your intentions if they are
different? You're doing something very cool.
ANON
I want your megaphone.
WOMAN
They're doing something very cool.
WOMAN
Well, they're looking for some unlimited
free space. Are you ready? It's government funded.
ND
[handing megaphone to ANON] You pull
the trigger, it's all yours.
ANON
[through megaphone] Rupert Murdoch will
take this place over within about probably six months.
WOMAN
They're looking for some unlimited free space.
He wants to live/exist. She wants to be. [indicates BK] And you just
want to enjoy it. Give it to him. He's the easy one. He has no plans
whatsoever. He'll just sit around and enjoy it. How did you get the
really cool space? Did you just kind of pick it? Just to be? How did you
get it? You got the serious thing. You're in the middle. And he's got
the [tape unintelligible, noise, hollering]
