<taystes_room>
2001 by Jenny Marketou
<taystes_room> is an ongoing interdisciplinary project
which consists of an installation and a web component. <taystes_room>
investigates the transparency and the proliferation of internet-based
monitoring systems such as webcams , surveillance cameras , security
and CCTV in our daily lives. My intention in <taystes_room>
is to examine the diffusion between private and public, reality and
fantasy in our culture and to explore the increasingly networked surveillance
of the voyeur. By taking the approach of reverse engineering I am re(translating)
the abstract data obtained from webcams, surveillance cameras and users
information on the internet back into the social space of the <room>
by means of architecture, light, sound and internet.
THE
INSTALLATION
<
taystes_room > is designed as an elaborate voyeuristic cluster
of six individual hubs covered with mirrors .Each hub is equipped with
LCD screen and a computers and all six create an environment which transports
the visitor into a shimmering atmosphere and displaced voyeuristic experience.
The <room> as an intimate space is no longer intimate .It is monitored
and codified under the sign of surveillance. There is a psychology and
visceral response in that transitional space of <taystes_room>
which is uncomfortable and feels uncomfortable and conveys anxiety by
means of control. Due to the nature of the <room> the viewers
can participate by simply being there as part of the <room> or
and they can interact with the web component.
