SmellBytes
Is a fictional narrative presented in the form of an installation and
a website. As the title suggests, SmellBytes is not
a futuristic gastronomic experience but a digital smell less project
which has been preceded by a long period of other projects and research
with actual smells which include videos, Do it Yourself Smell Maps,
and performances in the Situationist mode and directly related to the
Proustian smell and the use of odor to explore the connections between
collective memory, mapping, the imaginary, the narrative of the community
and technology.

My intentions in SmellBytes to use smell as a my subject
matter is to investigate how information reduces subjectivity on the
internet into a series of data based traits and propagates methods of
classification which present possibilities of manipulating social and
cultural defects in our cyberculture. Taking an imaginary and reverse
engineering approach I am speculating in the origins of a serial
sniffer programmed as an intelligent agent named Chris.053
who loves to roam on line only to sniff body odor on the net. The invisible
net running persona of Chris.053 is inspired by Jean
-Batiste Grenouille, the fetishist serial killer in Patrick Siskind's
best-selling novel Perfume.
