Accidental
Monuments,1998

"Accidental
Monuments" is conceived as an interactive networked environment
and a website which explores emotional survival, and exposes the layers
of emotional and aesthetic resonance in our relationships to place both
physical and virtual. Within individual, isolated iconic realities related
to my collective memory and the conscious of myself as not quite belonging, living
in the borders which means that one threads the fine line between positioning
and repositioning. What is the difference between being somewhere and
thinking of being in that same place? If all human relations are regulated
by proximity and distance, what is a stranger?
Through
direct real time interaction which is projected on the environment, the
viewers as an active participants and observers can enter/ or gaze at
distinct scenarios as they move back and forth between maintaining and
creating borders. A sense of illusionary space and time is created as
they find themselves lost in a simulated environment experiencing and
penetrating symbolic space.
To
be lost in a simulation is to believe or to be caught in its illusionary
power- a testimony or invitation to question long held beliefs about
consciousness,reality and perception.
“Accidental
Monuments” 1998 was conceived and produced with a research grant
during my residency at the Institute for Research in the Arts, College
of Fine Arts, Tempe, Arizona.
