i'm not entirely sure i agree with you... of course it is difficult. as
any form of negotiation within mainstream consumerist practices is
'difficult' ... but to what degree is it productive for us to circumscribe
the diversity of potential practices (perhaps still to be articulated?)
within the public domain 'produced' by this consumerism?... you say that
you have spent two weeks living in malls (and I cannot say how much i
commend you for your commitment and stamina in face of such a task), and i
believe there is important work to be done in mapping the fields which are
produced through the aggregation that sustains the proliferation of the
mall everywhere - i just wouldn't view this activity as 'constituting
limits'... least of all the limit of all publics... while guttenberg's
press perhaps rendered the idea of a public visible, i'd be skeptical of a
line of thinking which limited something's publicity to that which is
produced through the mass media today...
