ENTRACTE: vitruvius is without question the *superior neighbour* par
excellence. The reason I know this is that my other neighbours are all
in awe of her. Jordan Crandall is particularly attentive. vitruvius
doesn't just live in an apartment. She maintains a salon. Few realise
that it was vitruvius who introduced Gertrude Stein to Alice B. Toklas.
Gertrude had for years relied upon vitruvius for prudent investment
advice. Towards the end of this period Alice became very attentive to
vitruvius, regularly calling in to dust the paintings. Within a few days
of their meeting, Alice extended that courtesy to Gertrude alone. (She
had, it must be admitted, the better paintings.) Gertrude meanwhile
dropped vitruvius like a turd. But vitruvius is strong. vit merely
yawned and, attending to a stray sequin, said: who needs those wannabes
anyway? I have my famous danse macabre, I have the ghoulish Pierre, I
have the Cafe Sisyphus, my audience, my art. Indeed vitruvius does have
all of those things.
vitruvius says: you think the Kuspit review was bad? Let me tell you
I've been described as being built like a brick mausoleum without enough
flying buttresses. I've been panned from Helsinki to Macao and from
Durban to Brazzaville. Believe me, if it's in print and has a
circulation of more than twenty-five copies you mustn't complain.
