To respond to a point midway through your message, I think cyberspace does,
in fact, function beyond visibility -- well beyond. Narrowly defined as the
Web, cyberspace is, I would agree, a largely 'retinian' medium, to use your
term. But broadening the definition to include information spaces generally,
things become more complicated. The quite simple act of placing a telephone
call, for example, engages various informational systems, processes and
procedures that are almost completely invisible -- and documentation in the
form of a monthly bill is scant visual evidence of the wide immaterial
travels connoted by such a call, especially if that call is mediated by a
credit card that pays you back in frequent flier miles. The immateriality of
this kind of transaction -- or, perhaps more appropriately, its invisible
materiality -- leads me to conclude that "cyberspace" already functions well
beyond visibility.
