being placed and displaced id so intimately connected with the american
psychology that we hardly notice it... Las Vegas is the most placeless
place I have ever experienced, like an infinte streetcorner extending off
to the horizon... these aborted cities are fascinating, halfway between the
dream and the waking state... reminiscent of visiting the old world's fair
site out in Queens, where one walks into a faded photograph of the Kennedy
era and finds it populated with Equadorians having weekend cookouts and
playing futbol with their families, or abandoned missile silos that once
contained the destructive power of the center of stars and are now vertical
rusting caves with welded steel covers on them.
