In response to one aspect of your conversation, I am wondering how
perspectival conventions relate at all -- you refer to them as
normalizing technologies. Aren't they just another system of
representation, one which is supposedly modeled on human vision? Isn't
this question a bit like asking how photography relates to the internet
(i.e. that photography is another convention of representation with
which we are familiar, yet which we nonetheless eternally attempt to
define)? Are you trying to imply that networked space will eventually
become as normalized as Renaissance systems of perspective? If so, I
don't believe space is really an appropriately descriptive word; it
implies something physical which in turn suggests that the Renaissance
perspective analogy fits. If you mean to imply that the internet will be
a normalized part of our everyday life, rather an exciting, rapidly
developing new invention, then yes, I agree but it's difficult to
imagine how that will be.
