Storefront Building. 97 Kenmare Street (at Cleveland Place). A sharp sliver of a building, long and narrow.

Its ground floor facade, a collaborative project between architect Stephen Holl and conceptual artist Vito Acconci, is made up of irregularly shaped panels that turn on pivot points, swinging open to let light and air into the interior.

New York: A Guide To Recent Architecture lauds the design. The guide explains: "Blurring the boundaries between street and building, the small space and its surroundings merge so that inside and outside become one and the same."

The building's interior is equally unique. Eighteen inches wide at its narrowest point, it eschews right angles.
