TRANS I's Installation video still : Jenny Marketou

From the moment the gaze exists I am already something other,in that I feel myself becoming an object of the gaze of others. But this position which is reciprocal one, offers also know that I am an object who also knows himself to be seen. Jacques Lacan, 1988.

As we go into the space we encounter the sequence of five video oversize projections, each one featuring a continuous loop of close up eyes of 80 women of many colors, ages and nationalities looking at you.The eyes are staring eyes.We look at the eyes, but we also feel ourselves being looked at.Each projection is accompanied by dj sounds created on the fly.
The sensation is uncanny-a familiar look is suddenly made strange as it embodies the role of the "performer" As we move closer we are surrounded by those eyes. The repeated sequence holds the gaze,we are compelled to stand and watch. Either way the usual boundaries between the viewer and the viewed are disturbed.

The project was commissioned by the World Wide Video Festival, Annual International Media Art Festival, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
