Appropriation, Take 2?

for Alan Horvath

By Joanne Cornelius

One of the things that comes to mind when I think of Alan is the hilarious tale of his failed attempt to lift a copy of Ukan from the main branch of the Cleveland Public Library in the early 1970s.

The story goes that Alan, with the assistance of a friend, conspired to "borrow" a copy from the stacks and then lower it out a window onto the street to retrieve later. Problem was, after Alan pulled the book and dropped it out the window, instead of hitting the ground below it smacked a cop right on the head!

Certainly such an escapade only helped to fuel Alan's passion for making levy's work more widely accessible. His tremendous re-printing/publishing efforts afforded countless folks the discovery of d.a.'s work & without them risking an arm or leg in the process!
