Rochelle Ratner -- "Hide & Seek "

WINTER

I bet you think
I built this snowman.
Well, I'm not going
to tell you otherwise
and if he dares to
I'll bop his head off
even if he is twice my size.
I used to want things so badly
I took what others had
and pretended. Like the time
with the spelling bee
when I told the story
of Janet Fishman and I
fighting it out at the end
so proudly my mother
went and told the teacher.
After that I learned
to pretend to myself,
till I was fourteen
and seeing this psychologist
sort of person. I told him
again and again about all my friends
until things finally fell apart
and I was taken to him, crying,
only to find he'd been believing me
all along. Anyway, like I said,
Barbara built the snowman.
