Yoshizawa Syoji was born in Shizuoka in 1937. His work has appeared in exhibitions in Japan, Germany, Italy, France, and the united States, and in more than 30 books and magazines - from ASA in 1965 to SHI SHI in 1993. He edited SHI SHI (Concrete and Visual Poetry) from 1981 - 1993. In addition to moving from a basic exploration of Kanji characters into greater abstraction, he explored sound and sculptural possibilities of visual poetry.
